The Muslim month of fasting officially ends when the New Moon is sighted on the last day of the fast. If you don't see the moon, technically you cannot end your fast. Usually, each larger area has official moon watchers to watch for the emoon on the last day of the fast.
In most parts of the world, Ramzan ended last evening (Monday Evening) and the offical celebration of Eid began in earnest, when large amounts of foods are consumed through out the Muslim world.
Yesterday evening, the official moon watchers in Delhi saw the moon, and declared Ramzan to be over. The same thing happened in Lucknow, west of us, and in Bihar and Calcutta, to the east of us. And to the south of us and to the north of us.
Everyone saw the moon, and everyone declared the fast to be over, and that Tuesday should be a day of feasting...
Except for Varanasi.
In our fair city, the official moon watchers either could or did not see the moon. So for our area, the fast is not over, and the celebration will not begin until tomorrow.
Sigh.

There must have been moon watchers somewhere here in the Midwest, if only for the ever-growing Somali population. The way things are here, though, I wouldn't be surprised if folks in the high tech Twin Cities tracked this observance online...
